Today the Academic Senate approved a project that has been on my mind for some "time" ⏳ now - a time capsule for our new South Quay Square 🎉. I got the idea from a few areas – Jeff Bezos funding the Clock of the Long Now⏰, an episode of The Orville 🚀, and discussions I have had in the past with my colleague Natalie Pang - who always got me to consider the archival perspective and value of things. South Quay Square, set to be the ultra-modern hub for the School of Arts and the School of Business, represents more than just architectural innovation. It's a symbol of our collective commitment to progress, creativity, and sustainability 🌱. As we've been planning this building, with its many innovative aspects - radio station 📻, webcasting studios 🎥, film studio 🎬, and audio rooms 🎧, (and more) I've been reflecting on the deeper significance of this project.This time capsule is about capturing the essence of who we are now, our aspirations, and our dedication to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 🌍. It will be opened long after the 2030 SDG deadline, providing a unique opportunity for future Sunway academics to evaluate our accomplishments and the impact of our efforts.I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the President for enthusiastically presenting this proposal at the Senate meeting. After the meeting, the President shared some ideas, suggesting the inclusion of a letter to the future President (and campus community). This thoughtful proposal extends beyond our architectural designs and strategic plans; it symbolizes a commitment to preserving our institution's identity, values, and aspirations for future generations to cherish and reflect upon.What will each school contribute to this time capsule? How will they encapsulate their essence and aspirations? The possibilities are endless, and I can't wait to see what we collectively decide to leave for the future. Thank you to my colleagues for embracing and building upon this creative 'seedling' of an idea. To the future Sunway staff: I hope this time capsule serves as a testament to our vision, commitment, and the legacy we aim to build.
